Duct Cleaning

Why should you get your air ducts cleaned?
Answer: Because they get dirty!

In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all  homes through regular use, there are several other factors that can increase the need for air duct cleaning:

• Pets
• Occupants with allergies or asthma
• Cigarette or cigar smoke
• Water contamination or damage to the home's HVAC system
• Home renovation or remodeling projects

Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as babies, young children and the elderly tend to be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help to address.

Should brand new homes have their ducts cleaned?
Answer:
Yes! The problem is in the mud!

Nail heads & seams are filled with joint compound (mud) which contains 2 – 5% of the material Crystalline Silica and is classified as a known human  carcinogen. When the dried mud is sanded, respirable dust is released into  the air.  This means the particles are a size that can be drawn into the lungs  through the normal breathing process. This residue invades both the supply & return  systems during construction and should be removed.  Each time the blower fan  comes on, the particles of Crystalline Silica blow back into the air and into your  family’s lungs. Compared to the cost of the construction and the potential danger to the occupants, the expense of a complete air duct cleaning is trivial.

How is it done?

Visit our Duct Cleaning Process page for more detailed information

Proper HVAC Cleaning Process involves two key components:

Collection of Contaminants
During cleaning, your entire HVAC system is placed under continuous negative pressure (suction) using our Abatement HEPA-AIRE vacuum. All loose particles are extracted, collected & removed from  job.
Agitation of Contaminants
Source removal begins with use of compressed air nozzles & air whips used as agitation devices to loosen contaminants from duct surfaces & push them down towards our HEPA suction unit.
Many low cost competitors are using a Rotobrush type system which is only a step process and are not putting your whole system under suction. Don't be fooled by low cost service which can result in a low quality job.

System Maintenance
There are a few things that you can do to maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of your HVAC system:
* Get good filters – visit our Indoor Air Quality Products page which will show  you different levels of filtration that are available for your home
* Clean/change your filters as required
* Your HVAC system will still become dirty over time. Have your system inspected every two – three years to determine whether your system needs to be cleaned again

Application of Anti-Microbial Spray
Under certain conditions, it is advisable to apply an anti-microbial spray onto  hard metal duct surfaces.  These conditions include visible signs of mold or other  odor-causing contamination. Anti-microbial sprays are designed to eliminate  odors associated with bacteria, mold, mildew, smoke, animals, cooking and spoilages. Complete cleaning must always precede the application of liquid  products. We only use products listed by EPA for use inside ductwork.

Coil Cleaning
Coil cleaning is a necessary part of good HVAC system maintenance.  Routine  duct cleaning includes a light cleaning of coils using vacuum and/or high  pressure air washing.  If light cleaning is not sufficient, deeper cleaning using power sprayers and chemicals my be required.  It is not always possible to adequately clean coils without disassembly.

Video Tape
We have the capability to snake through the ductwork with a video camera to  look for obstructions, contamination, duct integrity, etc. We can document this  and provide the customer with a video tape copy. Call to discuss pricing.

Dry Vent Cleaning

Dryer vent cleaning should be done at least once every one to two years to avoid a potential fire hazard.  Some signs to look for that your vent may need to be cleaned are:

  • If it takes more than 50 minutes to dry your clothes
  • If your dryer is getting extremely hot during use
  • If lint is building up behind the dryer or exhaust vent
